In 1956, Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara (Benicio Del Toro) and a band of Castro-led Cuban exiles mobilize an army to topple the regime of dictator Fulgencio Batista.

April 8th (Thursday), 7:30 PM — Dena Eakles: Sustainability and Peace
Dena has been a student of peace and sustainable living for decades. Her studies with indigenous healers have led to the creation of Echo Valley Farm, a learning center and sustainable farm. She is also founder of Echo Valley Hope, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing sustainable living and supporting the well-being of all people through initiatives of peace. She is the author of The Peace Warrior, a book of poetry and prose.
The premise of this lecture and subsequent discussion is to revive our interconnectedness with the earth and to allow the natural relationship to re-emerge.
April 10th (Saturday), 7:30 PM — Open Mic Night
Come and share music, poetry, spoken word, or any other performance art. We like it if you just come listen, too!
April 14th (Wednesday), 7:30 PM — Movie night: Capitalism: A Love Story
This is Michael Moore’s magnum opus: the grandest statement of his career-long belief that big business is screwing the hard-working little guy while government connives in the atrocity.
April 28th (Wednesday), 7:30 PM — Movie Night: Badlands
He was 25 years old. He combed his hair like James Dean. She was 15. She took music lessons and could twirl a baton. For a while they lived together in a tree house. In 1959, she watched while he killed a lot of people.

March Events at People’s Books
Lots of great author presentations and movies to look forward to in March!
March 10 (Wednesday), 7:30 p.m. — Movie: Rethink Afghanistan
Director Robert Greenwald’s 2009 documentary of the ongoing
war in Afghanistan features experts from
Afghanistan, the U. S., and Russia discussing
the collateral damage of the war: all its costs and
ill-considered ramifications. The film helped start a movement that encourages an alternative to the current U. S. policy in Afghanistan.
March 13 (Saturday), 7:30 p.m. — Open Mic Night
Come to present or just to listen!
March 14 (Sunday), 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. — General Membership Meeting
Join us as we celebrate community, vote in our new Board of Directors,
and hear reports on the current status of the co-op. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
March 15 (Monday), 6:00 p.m. — Worker Collective Meeting
Volunteers: take part in planning next month’s
events, or come to share your ideas and to meet other volunteers!
March 18 (Thursday), 7:30 p.m. — Author Event: Scott Stoll’s Falling Uphill
Scott worked as a graphic designer before losing his job and his
girlfriend, and finally setting off to fulfill his dream of riding a
bicycle around the world. His book Falling Uphill is the story of his
adventures and the lessons he learned in the course of thousands of miles,
over six continents, through many mishaps, and ending up with a little more peace and enlightenment.
March 20 (Saturday), 7:30 p.m. — Valerie Laken’s Dream House, with Nick Demske
Valerie teaches creative writing classes at UW-Milwaukee; she has an MA in Slavic
Literature and an MFA in Creative Writing. Her short stories have appeared in numerous
magazines, and she received an honorable mention in the Best American Short Stories.
Her debut novel, Dream House, was named one of the Best Books of 2009 by Kirkus Reviews,
and it was lauded by The New York Times Book Review as the “perfect haunted house story for these unnerving times.”
Nick Demske will also read poems from his self-titled book, which will be published by Fence Books in fall of 2010.
March 24 (Wednesday), 7:30 p.m. — Movie: The Seventh Seal
This is Swedish director Ingmar Bergman’s 1957 film, a favorite of Woody Allen’s and
an existential classic. It received the jury’s special prize at Cannes in 1957. Set in the middle
ages, featuring a chess game played between a character and Death, and full of poetic lines like
these: “I shall remember this hour of peace: the strawberries, the bowl of milk, your faces in
the dusk. . . . I shall remember our words, and shall bear this memory between my hands as carefully
as a bowl of fresh milk”--what’s not to love?

Valentine’s Day/Anti-Valentine’s Day Open Mic Night at People’s Books
Saturday, February 13th at 7:30 PM
Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is here. What better way to celebrate it than having your voice heard. This is a call to all poets, spoken word artists, troubadours, or anyone who just needs to monologue. Tell the world your desires, lament a lost love, rag on the greeting card industry or craft an impromptu love poem that Neruda himself couldn’t touch.
Our turn-out was so great last year that we’ve decided to do this again! Don’t miss it.

Twenty-Five miles from town, a million miles from mainstream society, a loose-knit community of radicals live in the desert, struggling to survive with little food, less water and no electricity, as they cling to their unique vision of the American dream.
Saturday February 13th, 7:30pm: Valentine’s Day Open Mic
Join us for our second annual Valentine’s Day open mic. Last year was so successful that we are holding another one. Local celebrities and artists attend this event; it is one surely not to miss. Talk about how much you love love, or not, but join us for this joyous occasion.
Wednesday February 24th, 7:30pm: screening Bicycle Thief
Thursday February 25th 7:30pm: author event: Tony Somali: Peace Vigil
Join us for an evening with local author, doctor, and Buddhist Tony Somlai. Tony will speak on his new book Peace Vigil.

Join us to celebrate community and the new year with movies (Poetry in Motion and The Corporation), a dessert and appetizer potluck, a raffle with prizes from local organizations, and a 20% discount. Drink are provided by the bookstore.

We are holding a joint fundraiser with our new roommates, A Broader Vocabulary Cooperative. Performers include Ali Lubbad, Sandy Weisto, Lenore Lee, JoAnn Chang, and Matt Reiland.

Join us at the bookstore to hear some great music by local musicians.
Thursday, January 21st 7:00pm: Poetry reading by the Urban Echo Poets on the theme of Nature
