The Cooperative
Cooperative organizational structure
People’s Books Co-op is a democratically run for-profit business, incorporated in Wisconsin as a consumer cooperative on September 1, 2007. Anyone can become a member, and any member can run for election to the Board of Directors.
The Board meets once a month to govern general aspects of the cooperative, particularly legal and financial issues, and make broad policy decisions. Board meetings are open to all members and the general public.
The Worker Collective meets once a month to organize day-to-day activities. The Worker Collective is open to all volunteers and includes all coordinators (volunteer, events, online activities, membership, financial).
All profits are reinvested in the co-op and pay for one half-time employee. The structure of the co-op, including the Board of Directors and rights of members, is outlined in the Bylaws.
The Co-op is sustained through volunteer labor, including all staffing at the front counter (which includes assisting customers, ringing up orders, and organizing titles in the store), committee based planning, and direct action to achieve committee goals, such as promoting the co-op around the community, organizing in-store events, organizing and staffing out-of-store sales at local events, volunteer recruitment, facilities maintenance, and other tasks.
